How To Say Good-Bye to 2020

As we bring closure to this highly political, pandemic year, we give pause to reflect on it, both personally and professionally. And there are two ways to look at it. One way is to ask the question, what did the pandemic do to me this year, what happened to me? Another way to look at it is to ask the question, what has the pandemic done for me? What has the pandemic taught me? The latter approach is constructive and resilient, as opposed to ending the year feeling like a victim of 2020. We choose to view 2020 with resilience.

I, like most, experienced significant personal challenges, grief, and loss in 2020, but simultaneously it was a year that gave me permission to process the challenges and re-visit my life story and 2020 afforded an opportunity for me to re-assess my values, priorities, and purpose in life. As I was not able to travel for business, I experienced the quiet and rhythm in a daily routine and more solace without the usual social noises and distractions. While I truly missed the energy of being with other people at business meetings and conferences, the absence of face-to-face social interaction affirmed my love for my customers and friends in this industry. I truly enjoy being with my clients and spending time with them and getting to know them on a personal level, it is not just a business transactional relationship.

The unknowns of 2020 reminded me to take life one day at a time, to be more patient with myself and others, to show more care, listen better, love more, and do more of the things that bring me joy. I immediately established a weekly Monday morning “stand-up” with our team at Care Bridge, a safe place to get the vital signs on each person, to ask sincerely, “how are you doing”? These stand-ups built greater openness and cohesion in our team as we shared more the impact of the pandemic on our personal lives and on those we love, with each other. We shared sadness, sorrow, and joys, like the birth of new babies and grandbabies in 2020. This weekly dedicated time spent together supported us and enabled us to bring our best selves and our total commitment to our customers each day, knowing there were people there to uplift us during the tough times.

When the World Health Organization formally announced a global pandemic caused by COVID-19 on March 11, our team at Care Bridge International got agile and released a FREE Analytic-Powered COVID-19 calculator in less than two weeks.
